NC, UML 'agree' on sharing top posts

KATHMANDU, March 19: Ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML on Friday reached a tentative agreement on sharing vacant positions in various constitutional bodies.



According to an NC leader present at the meeting, the two parties have agreed to appoint Nepali Congress nominees in the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and National Planning Commission. The UML agreed on Nepal Rastra Bank governor and the chief commissioner at Election Commission. [break]



The two parties have agreed that UCPN (Maoist) will get to appoint the Auditor General and the chief of the Public Service Commission.



Party sources said NC is nominating former Secretary Shree Kanta Regmi as CIAA chief and Jagadish Chandra Pokharel is likely to be named NPC vice chairman. The UML has forwarded the name of former NPC member Ganesh Man Gurung as the chief election commissioner.



"This is a tentative agreement reached," said a party leader, asking anonymity. "There could also be changes in the party´s nominees before the Constitutional Council meeting takes a final decision on Saturday morning."
