KATHMANDU, July 28: The Nepali Congress (NC) central working committee (CWC) meeting on Thursday saw heated debates over a proposed amendment to the party statute that would grant party president the right to nominate chiefs and members of the party´s departments and wings.

The proposal was tabled by a regulation drafting committee led by party General Secretary Arjun Nasingh KC.[break]

Justifying the proposal, NC leader Ananda Dhungana, who is a member of the committee demanded that the party president be given absolute power to form the party´s central department and wings. The central committee has so far been nominating the chiefs and members of the party´s department and wings.

However, other CWC members, including Gynendra Bahadur Karki, opposed the proposal and argued that the proposed regulations should make the central committee stronger than the president.

The current attempts to make the president all-powerful will not be in line with the policy of decentralization that the NC has adopted, Karki was quoted as saying.

They even argued that the president should not be given more rights than party´s statute has granted him.

During the meeting, 21 members forwarded their views on regulations. Party officials said deliberations on the proposed amendment to the provision on the party president´s power will continue on Friday.
