Doctors pronounced him dead at about 9 am shortly after he was brought to the hospital, according NC leader and advocate Radhe Shyam Adhikari. Late Tamang had been living in a room given him by Adhikari at his residence for the past 15 years.[break]
Adhikari said Tamang had complained of some health complication shortly after he arrived home after morning walk at about 8 am. A patient of diabetes, blood pressure and asthma, Tamang was then rushed to hospital for treatment.
A large number of NC leaders, activists and well-wishers had reached Norvic Hospital as the news of the death of Tamang, who is revered for his selfless and value-based politics, spread.
His dead body was later taken to NC´s Headquarters in Sanepa, where leaders and activists from various parties, including Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai had paid their last tributes to him. Tamang´s last rites will be held at Swayambhu in the capital as per the Buddhist and Tamang tradition, Sunday, according to NC.
While passing the condolence motion over the sudden demise of Tamang, an emergency CWC meeting of NC Saturday decided to close its office and fly its flag half-mast for three days to mourn Tamang´s death. The meeting has also decided to organize functions in all the 75 districts to pay homage to late Tamang on the 13th day of his demise.
While paying their last tributes, various leaders have termed Tamang´s death as a big loss to democracy. They have hailed him as selfless leader and an icon of value-based politics.
NC President Sushil Koirala said NC will always remember Tamang as a leader of great integrity. “I am speechless over the sad demise of Tamang. The contribution made by Tamang in the long struggle for democracy will remain an unforgettable chapter in the history of people´s struggles for democracy in Nepal,” he said.
Koirala said Tamang had made a great contribution to the nation, people, democracy and parliamentary tradition.
Issuing a statement later in the evening, Prime Minister Bhattarai has said that he as well as the government was shocked over the sad demise of Tamang. While expressing condolence to the bereaved family, Bhattarai said Nepal can easily address the existing problems if all political leaders adopted value-based politics in the footsteps of Tamang.
Stating that Nepali politicians can learn a lot from late Tamang, CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said his demise was an irreparable loss to the Nepali democratic movement. “The values, ideology and selfless politics practiced by Tamang are very important. We should be able to learn from him,” he said.
NC CWC member Radhe Shyam Adhikari said Tamang was a socialist leader in the true sense of the word.
