NBA poll ends, vote count begins Monday

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: Lawyers across the country on Saturday cast their votes at 33 polling stations to elect their central leaders for the next three years.



Three different panels have contested the elections to lead Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the umbrella organization of lawyers. [break]



According to election commissioner Rabiraj Bhandari, 83.83 percent of the eligible voters cast their ballots. Altogether 8,215 lawyers are affiliated with NBA.



Bhandari said that the counting of votes will begin from Monday as ballot boxes from across the country will be collected by Sunday evening. He said it will take four days to count the votes.



Hari Krishna Karki from the Professional Progressive Republican Panel, Sher Bahadur KC from the Broader Democratic and Professional Lawyers´ Panel and Surendra Thapa Magar from the Independent Panel have contested the post of president.

Din Mani Pokhrel from the Progressive Panel, Sunil Kumar Pokhrel from the Democratic Panel and Jagadev Chaudhari from the Independent Panel have contested the post of general secretary.



Bal Kumar Gupta from the Eastern Region, Tika Ram Bhattarai from Central, Anita Gurung from Western, Padam Prasad Baidik from Mid Western and Rajendra Bahadur Saud from Far Western have contested the post of vice-president from the Progressive Panel.



Harindra Prasad Rai has contested the post of treasurer and Nir Kumar Rai, Kapil Chandra Pokharel, Kedar Prasad Koirala, Shyam Narayan Shrestha, Padam Bahadur Roka, Sarasawoti Shrestha, Raj Laxmi Bajracharya, Krishna Prasad Pokhrel and Birendra Sah the posts of members from the Progressive Panel.



Janak Panday from Eastern Region, Mithilesh Kumar Singh from Central, Biswa Ghimire from Western, Bir Bahadur Rokaya from Mid Western and Nathu Ram Chaudhari from Far Western have contested the post of vice-president from the Democratic Panel.



Mohan Ingnam has contested the post of treasurer and Raju Katuwal, Gajendra Shankar Timila, Ganesh Adhikari, Sagar Bista, Prasanna Krishna Das, Thakur Acharya, Nagendra Yadav, Binita Karki and Laxmi Devi Dahal the posts of members from the Democratic Panel.
