All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary, (ANNISU-R), which is close to the UCPN (Maoist), had carried out massive destruction on campus on Thursday. [break]
The group was angry at the formation of a campus unit by rival student union, All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), which is affilated to the CPN-UML.
“We condemn the criminal activities of the union. This has polluted academic atmosphere at the campus. We are not in position to run classes immediately,” said Khemman Khadka, chairperson of the campus management committee.
According to him, it was necessary to shut down the campus to prevent possible clashes between the students´ groups as well as to protect the campus building.
“We don´t understand why the so-called unions vandalize physical infrastructure. Each time they have an issue, they attack the building or infrastructure. This is disgusting,” he remarked.
On Thursday, ANNISU-R students also vandalized the campus chief´s office destroying the telephone, furniture and glass windows among other things. Following this, students close to other political parties had clashed with the union inviting police intervention.
The Maoist student union said it should be consulted before setting up units of other student unions.
