Monitoring committee on VAW begins work

KATHMANDU, Jan 1: The Monitoring Committee on Violence Against Women has started monitoring the incidents of violence against women throughout the country.



As per the information provided at a press conference held at the Prime Minister´s Office in Singha Durbar today, the monitoring committee constituted under the chairmanship of Secretary at the PMO Rajuman Singh Malla has started strict monitoring for preventing such incidents.[break]



It is stated that the committee will monitor VAW incidents including the rape of a woman after her abduction from the Tribhuvan International Airport Immigration Office, the murder of Shiva Hasami by setting her on fire, the death under dubious circumstances of Sraswati Subedi and Bindu Kumari Thakur and the disappearance of one Chhori Maiya Maharjan from the capital. It will also recommend action in these cases.



Secretary Malla said that the committee will also investigate into other incidents that have taken place of late across the country and submit a report to the government on this.



According to him, the process for action has been moved forward as per the directives issued by a meeting of the Gender Empowerment Central Coordination Committee that was chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai on December 30, 2012 that stern action be taken against the individuals and groups implicated in cases of violence against women (VAW) and that they should not be let free.
