KATHMANDU, Nov 13: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal held a meeting with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai at the former’s residence in Naya Bazar Sunday afternoon, shortly after he arrived home after completing his New York visit.
The meeting decided to hold talks with leaders from other political parties and convince them not to make the government decision to grant amnesty to murder convict lawmaker Bal Krishna Dhungel an issue. [break]
The meeting also decided to take ‘special’ measures to implement the seven-point peace deal earlier agreed by the three major political parties.
Likewise, the meeting decided to take initiatives to make the incumbent Bhattarai-led government a national consensus government.
Meanwhile, lawmaker Dhungel has organized a press meet in the capital and said that he has been a victim in the entire fiasco since the case is political in nature.
He stated that the Maoist had killed Bhuwan Kumar Shrestha during the insurgency period for espionage and has claimed his innocence saying that he was never involved in the murder directly. Dhungel was convicted for the case by the Supreme Court in 2055 BS.
Earlier, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers had forwarded the recommendation to President Dr Ram Baran Yadav for endorsement, a couple of hours after a sister of Ujjan Shrestha, who was murdered by Dhungel in 2004, filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court against the decision on November 10.
According to an official at the Prime Minister´s Office, the office dispatched a letter with the November-8 cabinet decision recommending amnesty for the Maoist lawmaker after the regular office hour.
