"While we have the mandate of the people to lead the government, we would not be in a position to draft the new constitution and conclude the peace process through a majority government," a politburo member quoted Dahal as saying at the politburo meeting on Thursday. Dahal was of the opinion that the party should push for a national government and intensify protests for formation of such a government.
The Maoist chairman also said the party should push for the promulgation of the new constitution on May 28. "Once the deadline is extended, we may have to go on extending the deadline again and again," he said.
A majority of leaders were against forming a majority government. Over a dozen leaders, including Devendra Paudel, Kul Bahadur KC, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Dev Gurung and Ram Karki, spoke during the meeting.
"Replacing the government by another majority government will not help diffuse the crisis," a Maoist source quoted party politburo member Ram Karki as saying. He was of the opinion that the party should intensify protests for a people´s constitution immediately. The meeting will continue on Friday.
The last standing committee meeting had decided to keep the option of tabling a no-confidence motion against the government open. The meeting also deliberated on how to make nationwide demonstrations on April 22 and May 1 effective.
