Locals block road to Sauraha

CHITWAN, April 11: Locals have obstructed the main entry point to Sauraha demanding that the road be black-topped. The two-week-long obstruction has inconvenienced tourists seeking to enter the tourist site.



Locals have blocked the entry by putting concrete pipes in the middle of the road. Tourism entrepreneurs say the obstruction has not only caused a number of problems, but also sent out a bad message. They say that even they support the demand that the road should be black-topped, but obstructing the road is not the right way to exert pressure.



But locals say that local bodies and hotel operators have not taken any initiative despite the fact that the road has worn out making it difficult to operate vehicles. They have warned that they will not lift the obstruction unless the 1,800-meter road from Saurahachowk of Tandi to Chitrasari of Sauraha is overhauled.



Before this, a 1,200-meter road section was repaired using Rs 8 million donated by various agencies, according to Ram Krishna Upreti, Chief Executive Officer of Ratnanagar Municipality. He added that the municipality does not have sufficient funds to repair the 1,800-meter road section.
