The fanfare is because of Chasok Tangnam, Limbus´ biggest cultural festival, which falls around the full moon in every winter. This year they are celebrating Chasok Tangnam in the first week of December for five days. Limbus, who claim themselves to be sons of soil, have been celebrating it after harvesting their crops every year for ages.
Four sub-groups of Kirant community-- Rai, Limbu, Sunuwar and Yakkha -- celebrate the harvesting festival by their respective names. Limbus call this festiaval Chasok Tangnam in which they worship the nature for letting them tilling and harvesting crops.
“Earlier, we used to celebrate it individually,” Subash Limbu, secretary of Kirant Yakthung Chumlung -- the representative organization of all Limbus -- says. “Now, we are celebrating it collectively with much more extravagance so as to establish it as our biggest cultural event.”
