Leaders assess Nepal-India ties

KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Leaders of different political parties have said Nepal´s multi-dimensional relations with India have not seen an improvement due to the existing political uncertainty, constitutional crisis and failure to establish the peace.



Speaking in an interaction program in the capital on Tuesday, President of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Pashupati Shumsher Rana said Nepal has trade, religious and cultural relations with India and there were also problems in the relations as Nepal and India are close neighbors.[break]



Rana stressed the need for developing a well-planned perspective and long-term vision for improving the relations.



He suggested taking initiatives for reaping benefits from the rapid economic progress achieved by Nepal´s northern neighbor China and its southern neighbor India. Rana pointed out the need for formulating big projects, developing the Khasa –Birgunj railway, expanding transport network and bringing in investment in mega hydroelectricity projects.



Chairman of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Nepal, Upendra Yadav Nepal´s relations with India should be developed in a new way .



He said India would have an important role to play in establishing peace in Nepal after UNMIN´s exit and in the country´s economic development.



Leader of the Unified CPN (Maoist) Top Bahadur Rayamajhi said that Nepal has been cheated by India since the signing of the Sugauli Treaty. He said his party maintains a policy of equidistance with India.



He said India has the intention of establishing its dominance in South Asia. He also stressed that all the unequal treaties and agreements with India should be resolved diplomatically.



Nepali Congress leaders and Minister for Energy Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said it is natural Nepal´s relations with India are characterized by cordiality and bitterness from time to time as Nepal and India are close neighbors.
