Landslide kills three school children

SINDHUPALCHOK, June 15: Three school children were killed after they were buried by a landslide in Sindhupalchok district on Friday.



Police said Rabi Bikram Karki, 12, Samiksha Karki, 9 and Samjhana Khatri, 16 were killed after being buried under the rubble brought on by the landslide in Bhotechaur VDC. Rabi and Samiksha were siblings. [break]



According to Lok Hari Khanal, Inspector at District Police Office of Melamchi, the three children were buried while drinking water from a tap at the bottom of a hill. They were on their way back to their homes after grazing goats and cutting grass in a nearby woods.



Two other children, six year old Rashmita Karki and Arpana Khatri were also buried under the debris. But they were rescued by the locals. Inspector Khanal said the rescued children´s condition was normal.



The police say the landslide was caused by Thursday night´s rains.
