Six of the 39 politburo members delivered their views on Khanal´s report on Thursday. All the six members criticized the report for taking ´too soft´ stance on the Maoists, said a politburo member present in the meeting.
"The chairman was criticized mainly on the portion of the report that said that the UML should be ready to sacrifice its leadership in the government for the sake of building national consensus," the member said.
They urged the leadership to take clear and strong stance on Maoists instead of adopting ambiguous policy on the former rebel party and making compromises in the name of building national unity.
"Leaders are critical against the chairman´s report because it hasn´t divulged into the Maoists´ mistakes, which are the major problems in the contemporary politics," the leader said.
Although senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal is heading the government, the party chairman has been insisting for forming a national unity government for long.
Leaders also criticized Khanal for accusing government leadership of not taking initiative to bring the Maoists to consensus.
But a politburo member close to Khanal argued that all the leaders who spoke in the meeting were critical against the paper as almost all of them are close either to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and/or KP Sharma Oli, who is Khanal´s rival within the party.
Those who spoke on Thursday are Mukunda Neupane, Mahendra Pandey and alternative politburo members Beduram Bhusal, Nagendra Chaudhary, Bijay Subba and Thammaya Thapa.
