HONG KONG, June 22: Nepali journalists on training in Beijing submitted a memo concerning the attack against Republica correspondent Khilanath Dhakal at the Nepali Embassy.

Addressing Prime Minister Jhalnath Khanal via Nepali ambassador to China Tanka Prasad Karki, the memo states that the recent news of the nationwide attacks on Nepali journalists and media has worried the Nepali journalists in China.[break]

“As per democratic values a journalist has the right to write news freely and it is the duty of the state to implement press freedom,” stated the memo. It also expressed concerns over lack of action against the accused, especially when the attackers are from the organization affiliated to the ruling party headed by the PM, and said that Parashuram Basnet should be booked for his crime.

Tribhuwan Poudel, secretary of the Kaski chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalist, Rohit Dahal, Ram Kumar ´elan´ and a student of journalism Dhurba Poudel who are in Beijing for a month, have signed the memo. Since Ambassador Karki was not in Beijing, the memo was handed over to counselor Nirmal Kafle.

FNJ UK demands action against Basnet

KATHMANDU:
The UK Chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) on Tuesday, submitted a memorandum to Nepal’s Ambassador to the UK, Dr. Suresh Chalise at his office in London, showing its concerns over the murderous attack on journalist Khilanath Dhakal on June 5.

The content of the letter states that the recent attack on journalist Dhakal has lent credence to the fact that the state has failed to provide security to journalists in the country and informs that the attack was premeditated, rather than accidental.[break]

The letter further added that it is an objectionable act on the part of the government to provide cover to the culprit, and has asked the government to bring the culprit to book at the earliest.

Though police has already nabbed Rohit Koirala and Manoj Rai in connection with the attack that took place on the night of June 5, the prime accused Parshuram Basnet has not been arrested as yet.
