BIRATNAGAR, March 5: Local authorities clamped indefinite curfew in Lahan of Siraha district beginning 12 noon Thursday, after Madhesi activists clashed with Tharus who were enforcing a general strike.

Chief District Officer Gehanath Bhandari said the curfew was imposed to avert any outbreak of communal violence.

Meanwhile, a strike called by Tharuhat Autonomous Province (Laxman Tharu group) has partial impact in Udaypur. Local transportation, marketplace, schools and industries are open. However, commuters are left in the lurch due to no operation of long route transport services.

Tharus have been calling general strikes along the Tarai belt for past few days in protest against a government decision, through an ordinance, to enlist Tharus among 92 Tarai-based indigenous nationalities under "Madhesi" category.
