The officials will be preparing a database of the rhino population in Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary and Pilibhit forest area, and each rhino will be assigned with a unique ID. [break]
The newspaper reports there are currently three rhinos in Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary -- a male, a female and a sub-adult -- which have moved from Nepal through Khata corridor and six rhinos of Royal Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve in Nepal recently moved to Lagga Bagga area in Uttar Pradesh´s Pilibhit forest division.
“The rhinos in this area move in and out of Nepal and recently three of them crossed the border and settled in the Katerniaghat area. With the help of the IDs, it will be easier to track the individual rhinos,” the newspaper quoted Harish Guleria, co-ordinator of Terai Arc Land, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), as saying.
Guleria said the WWF trained its officials in Nepal where a master ID has already been assigned to each rhino and soon it will train Uttar Pradesh Forest Department officials posted at Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary.
