The hospital has been conducting health check-ups of the employees once a week at their workplace for the past two-and-half months. [break]More than 400 employees have already availed the service at Singha Durbar, the hospital management said.
"More than 70 percent bureaucrats above 40 years have hypertension," said Dr Dinesh Kumar Lamsal, chief of Family Medicine and Emergency Department at the hospital, adding, "A lot of employees aged 25 to 30 also have high blood pressure." He said the employees also suffer from diabetes, kidney problem, liver problem and psychological problems.
A study conducted by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) in the past had also revealed that about 20 percent Kathmanduites have hypertension.
Dr Lamsal said the employees are suffering from high blood pressure due to their nature of work, unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits, which physicians describe as ´professional hazards´.
According to Dr Lamsal, even junior employees have several health complications including hypertension. He said some top level bureaucrats have serious health complications and some of them had even fainted at the workplace. "We cannot reveal the names of the top level bureaucrats, but the level of stress in them is very high ," he added.
At the request of the government, the hospital has started providing general health check-up service to employees at Singha Durbar. Dr Bimal Thapa, director of the hospital, said the government requested the hospital to start the service with a view to increasing the employees´ productivity. The hospital has asked all the employees above 40 years to undergo whole body check-up.
The hospital also plans to provide psychological counseling to the employees at their workplace. Dr Thapa said psychological counseling is necessary as some employees develop frustration due to work load. He said the hospital will hire psychologists and psychiatrists to provide counseling to the employees.
