Hostility grows among cadres of major parties

GORKHA, Nov 9 : As the poll date draws closer, cadres of political parties are showing increased hostility against each other. The incidents of clashes between the supporters of major political parties have suddenly spiked over a few days.



The frequency of the clashes between UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML is on the rise. The cadres of UCPN (Maoist), the party that swept all three constituencies of Gorkha in the last CA polls, have been engaged in fighting with NC as well as UML supporters. [break]



The episodes of poll related violence have been going on in the district where candidates of 14 different political parties and one independent contestant are in the race.

In the lasted incident of poll related violence in the district, UCPN (Maoist) cadres vandalized NC party office at Borlang VDC Saturday morning.



According to the NC district Vice President, Mohan Pokharel, UCPN (Maoist) cadres abruptly entered the office and set the NC flag and office board on fire. On the same day, UCPN (Maoist) also clashed briefly with the UML poll campaigners at Aaruarbang VDC. The UCPN (Maoist) cadres have already confronted other parties´ activists in around half a dozen places within the last 15 days in Gorkha district alone.



Similarly, six people have been injured after CPN-UML supporters clashed with NC activists at Manakot in Bajura district. According to eyewitnesses, the supporters of the two parties entered into a brawl while they were conducting door-to-door campaigns at Manakot-3 in the district.



Meanwhile, an unidentified group vandalized the vehicles of two candidates in Rautahat on Friday night. The vehicle used by UCPN (Maoist) candidate Devendra Patel in constituency 6 was vandalized where it was parked at night after the poll campaign. Patel´s vehicle bearing Indian registration number BR 1 AP 661 sustained minor damage as the vandals broke windscreens.



Similarly, the vehicle, which also bears Indian number plate BR 06 PB 6219, used by Sudip Raj Kandel, the candidate of Rajendra Mahot-led Sadabhawana Party in the constituency 6, was also vandalized by an unidentified group.



The district police said that investigation over the incident is under way and the police are on the hunt for vandals.
