ITAHARI, March 11: Government health workers in Sunsari district, who have been demanding security after a stray bomb went off at Sitagunj Health Post premises in Ramgunj Belgacchiya Village Development Committee two days ago, have stopped providing any services except emergency from Thursday.

Services at all primary health centers, health posts and sub-health posts in the district have been affected by the indefinite strike by health workers, who padlocked the District Public Health Office (DPHO) and staged a sit-in throughout the day.

The agitating staffers have maintained that they will not return to their duties unless the government guarantees security for health workers and end extortion drives and death threats.

The protest has affected around 5,000 patients who have throng five primary health centers, 12 health posts and 40 sub-health-posts in the district.

“We have been forced to protest as we don´t have an environment for doing our work,” said senior health officer at DPHO Raj Narayan Mandal.

Six children where injured when the stray bomb left behind by the Janatantrik Madheshi Mukti Tigers went off inside Sitagunj Health Post Tuesday. The armed outfit had written to the health post a few days ago demanding donations and left the bomb at the premises after the health post delayed payment, according to chief of the health post Ram Babu Shrestha.

“The underground outfits have demanded hefty donations from the chiefs of all health institutions in the district. One´s life is much more precious than one´s job,” Shrestha reasoned. Police claimed that they would trace the culprits behind the bomb explosion through phone calls and arrest them soon.
