NEPALGUNJ, Jan 27: Government employees in Banke halted all services on Wednesday protesting the murder of Sitapur Village Development Committee (VDC) secretary Indra Bahadur Shrestha. They have demanded that the guilty be brought to book.

Shrestha was abducted at Bogatiya and shot dead nearby while returning to his rented room in Nepalgunj from office on Tuesday evening. Shrestha had been living with his wife Bishnu Maya and a son in the rented room.

"We will launch stringent protests if the administration failed to arrest the murderers," said Kavi Ram Budhathoki, a health employee.

The agitating employees carried Shrestha´s body through major thoroughfares in Nepalgunj before sending it to Surkhet, where his parents live, for last rites.

Two separate groups have claimed responsibility for the murder. Banke-Bardiya in-charge of Tarai Janatantrik Party Adarsha called a local journalist an hour after the murder to own responsibility for the killing. Jwala Singh´s armed outfit has also claimed responsibility for the murder.

Chief District Officer of Banke Birendra Bahadur Baniya said it was an act of frustration carried out by criminals following the arrest of Pappu Yadav, leader of an armed outfit, a few days ago. CDO Baniya claimed identity of the murderers has been partly revealed and they would be arrested within a few days.
