KATHMANDU, Feb 15: The government´s plan to introduce Mine Risk Education (MRE) in the districts, which have been identified as risk-bearing and most-affected, has moved forward after the government sent necessary budget to 43 such districts.

According to the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, about 6.5 million rupees have already been sent to the districts for the purpose.[break]

“Each of the 43 districts will receive Rs 150,000,” Shaligram Sharma, under-secretary at the ministry, told Republica, adding necessary teaching materials including leaflets and pamphlets are being dispatched.

MRE will educate people on how to keep distance from suspicious objects (possibly explosives), ensure security and report to the concerned authority in case of possible danger.

MRE is one among the five major components of Mine Action. Other components are demining, assistance to mine victims, advocacy for mine-threat-free society and destroying stockpiles of mines.

As per its demining program, the government has cleared 38 minefields out of the 53 that were laid by Nepal Army during the decade-long insurgency.
