KATHMANDU, Aug 29: The Transitional Justice Advocacy Group (TJ Advocacy Group) and the National Network of Families of Disappeared and Missing Nepal (NEFAD) have taken strong exception to the government decision to recommend the ordinance for formation of disappearance, truth and reconciliation commission to the president for approval.

"We have serious objection and disagreement over the ordinance, which is prepared without holding any consultation and is against the verdict issued by the Supreme Court," reads a press statement issued by NEFAD and TJ Advocacy Group on the eve of 29th International Day of the Disappearance. They have accused the government of preparing the ordinance neglecting the concerns of families of the disappeared and missing and ignoring the spirit of the ordinance tabled in the erstwhile parliament.

They have also urged the president to reject the ordinance saying it is intended to give blanket amnesty to those involved in serious crimes.

Earlier, human rights activists had also expressed objection to the ordinance and urged the government to reconsider its move.

The cabinet meeting on Monday had decided to recommend the ordinance for formation of disappearance, truth and reconciliation commission to the president for approval. The government had forwarded the ordinance to the president on Tuesday.
