Govt confirms 2 swine flu deaths

KATHMANDU, Dec 28: The Health Ministry on Monday confirmed two swine flu deaths in the country. [break]



A 31-year-old woman from Chitwan died on December 5 while a 29-year-old woman from Bhaktapur died on December 24, the ministry said in a press statement.



The ministry said the doctors failed to save their lives even though the Chitwan woman was kept treated for 25 days and the second victim for 29 days in intensive care unit.



The statement says the second victim had her bilateral pneumonia cured but developed secondary infections and eventually died of multiple organ failure.



The ministry also revealed 150 confirmed infections of pandemic H1N1 2009 virus, otherwise known as swine flu. Among them 106 are men and the rest women. Around 60% of the patients are in between the age of 15 and 45 years.



The ministry had announced a US-based non-resident Nepali couple and their son as the first persons to be diagnosed with the disease on June 29. The ministry on October 15 had declared that the virus had appeared among the masses after they found the virus in persons who had no history of travel and had not come into contact with any confirmed patients.



The ministry said 114 persons have been confirmed to have been infected after the declaration on October 15 with Kathmandu district having the largest number of cases at 35 followed by Kaski (32), Chitwan (23), Parbat (11), Lalitpur (5), Myagdi (4), Illam (2), and Sunsari and Morang at one each.
