KATHMANDU, April 5: In a significant shift to the country’s weekly routine, the government has decided to introduce a two-day weekend—Saturday and Sunday—starting this week, marking a departure from Nepal’s long-standing single-day break.

The decision, taken during a Cabinet meeting on Sunday, was announced by government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel. It will apply to all government offices and educational institutions, effectively reshaping work and school schedules nationwide.

Officials say the move is not merely about work-life balance. With the country grappling with disruptions in petroleum supply, the extended weekend is intended as a practical measure to curb fuel consumption by reducing commuting and administrative operations for an additional day each week.

While the immediate trigger is the ongoing fuel challenge, the decision also opens up broader conversations about productivity, efficiency, and the possibility of longer-term changes to Nepal’s traditional work calendar.
