RAUTAHAT, April 9: The nearly month-long strike led by Rautahat chapter of Chamber of Commerce in Gaur to protest the government's decision to move the service centers of land survey and land revenue offices to Chandranigahpur, has been called off Wednesday morning.

According to Chief District Officer (CDO) Madan Bhujel, local agitators have announced withdrawal of the 23-day-long protest program in Gaur following a six-point agreement between the agitators and local administration on Tuesday evening in the presence of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Rautahat chapter of Chamber of Commerce and civil society leaders.

As per the agreement, the District Administration Office, Rautahat has agreed to recommend to the government to declare the deceased local protestor Ashish Thakur as a martyr, provide compensation of Rs 800,000 to the family of the deceased and a government job to a family member and form a probe committee to investigate the incident, informed Kanthamani Prasad Jayaswal, president of Rautahat Chamber of Commerce.

Following the death of a local protestor Ashish Thakur last Saturday, local agitators had further intensified their protest. Thakur, who was hit by Armed Police Force (APF) van during the protest, had died while receiving treatment at Gaur District Hospital.

Though the political parties' participation was not visible in the protest, the 30-party opposition alliance had reportedly intervened to end the protest, it is learnt. The withdrawal of the protest has coincided with the calling off of nationwide general strike by the opposition alliance. The strike had badly hit normal life in the district.
