Patients and relatives have to cover their noses to avoid the stench emanating from the garbage while entering the hospital.
Dr BP Das, the hospital´s director, says the garbage is negatively affecting the health of locals of Dharan.

“The garbage spreads infection, diarrhea and dysentery,” said Dr Das. “This increases flow of patients in the hospital.”
Areas around Bhanuchowk have also become smelly due to piles of garbage. This has made it difficult for locals as well as visitors to tour the marketplaces.
“It has become difficult to move around. For businessmen like us, it is more difficult as we sit in the same place for the whole day,” said Manoj Sah, a local businessman. He added that the whole municipality will smell of garbage if the problem is not sorted out soon.
Dharan´s locals throw garbage on the streets. The municipality was taking care of the garbage before. But this has not happened for the past seven days.

Shishir Shrestha, sanitation officer at the municipality, said the municipality produces 10 to 12 tons of garbage everyday. At present, there is as much as 60 tons of garbage littered on the streets.
Employees of local bodies across the country are on a strike demanding pay hike and benefits equal to that of civil servants.
“We will resume garbage collection as soon as our demands are met,” Shrestha said.
