KATHMANDU, Dec. 25: Former chief election commissioner Bhojraj Pokhrel has said it would be better to fix election date by the Election Commission (EC) rather than political parties.

At a programme organized by Nepal Civil Society in the capital on Tuesday, he said political parties were in immediate need of agreement to hold election because election was impossible without ample preparation.

On the occasion, leaders of different political parties stressed forging national consensus and going for election.

UCPN-Maoist leader Giriraj Mani Pokhrel said election date should be fixed based on political consensus. Formation of next government would also need the political agreement, he added.

Nepali Congress leader Min Bahadur Bishwokarma said only election was an effective tool to guide the country towards progress. So, Nepal was in need of immediate election, he stressed.

Similarly, CPN-UML´s Raghu Ji Pant said because the UCPN-Maoist hesitated to go for election, the political crisis deepened in the country. Major role to give political outlet to the country is of the UCPN-Maoist, he argued.
