According to the District Development Office, Okhaldhunga, the decline in food production has resulted in food crisis this year. Paddy, maize, millet and buck wheat planted on 23,870 hectares out of 105,864 hectares, the production stood only 51,922 metric tonnes, the office said.[break]
Agriculture technicians say this production can feed the district´s population of 200,000 only up to six months as the district needs 52,422 metric tonnes in a year.
District Health Officer Gyan Bahadur Basnet said lack of adequate food has started to affect quality family living as more people have malnourished lately. Even though 94 percent population of the district is dependent on agriculture, the production is not sufficient is meet local need.
The district has been facing food shortage since a long time and this year the situation may turn severe, said Basnet. RSS
