As per the revised flight schedule, he is being sent back from Chad Friday night on a Jet Airways flight. He is scheduled to arrive Nepal at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday. [break]
The idea of the escort is that he might disappear on the way as he faces human rights violation charges in the murder of Maina Sunar during Maoist insurgency period.
But it is not clear whether Nepal Army personnel or UN staffs are coming with Basnet from Chad.
Sources said there are differences between the Chad mission and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations over who should ´escort´ Basnet to Nepal. “Even the UN does not have any standard procedures on how an expelled peacekeeper should be repatriated,” the source said.
This is the first time in the 51-year long Nepal´s participation in the peacekeeping mission that a Nepal Army official deployed for a mission has been expelled over human rights violation charges.
The UN has already said Nepal should be responsible for nomination of an army officer accused of human rights violations in its peacekeeping mission. But the Nepal Army has maintained that Basnet was found innocent by its court of inquiry and was thus deployed to the UN peacekeeping mission.
