KATHMANDU, June 14: Expressing dissatisfaction toward the activities of the international secretariat of Amnesty International (AI), eight members of the 11-member AI Nepal chapter resigned on Sunday.

AI Nepal Vice-President Pratap Paudel, General Secretary Deek Prasad Ghimire, Treasurer Prabin Agrawal as well as executive committee members Arjun Adhikari, Padmini Thapa, Manju Devi Aryal, Shesh Kumar Niraula and Heramba Dev Bhattarai resigned from their positions at the AI movement.

Founding Chairman of the Nepal chapter Krishna Pahadi on June 11 had announced to dissociate himself from the AI movement stating that the AI had lost track on Nepal issues because of the vested interests of some people at the AI headquarters. He had also urged AI to accept its mistakes in Nepal and correct them. A day after Pahadi distanced himself from the organization, former chairman of AI Nepal, Krishna Kandel, also decided to part ways.

All who quit from AI have claimed that the international secretariat didn't respond to their questions regarding the AI's choice to remain silent on the death of Nanda Prasad Adhikari, who died while staging hunger strike demanding legal action against the murderers of his son Krishna Prasad.

Likewise, they have raised serious question over AI's alleged backing of CK Raut, a Madhesi activist, who is booked time and again in Nepal on sedition charges.

"In December 2014, we had briefed the representative from the AI secretariat that the regular backing to Raut has saddened its well-wisher in Nepal. However, our concerns were brushed aside," said Agrawal. "We thought being part of AI after it chose to remain silent after the death of Nanda Prasad would be untenable," he added.

However, AI Nepal Chairman Surya Bahadur Adhikari said that the allegations made against AI were baseless and that the AI secretariat will soon issue clarifications on the issues. "Though Pahadi is former chairman of AI, he is not an AI Nepal member since 2003," said Adhikari.
