EC briefs PM on voter registration

KATHMANDU, April 16: The chief and members of the Election Commission (EC) on Friday briefed Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal about process, prospects and problems in the ongoing registration of voters with photos and fingerprints.



Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety and other members met the prime minister at his residence in Baluwatar Friday morning.[break]



"We requested the prime minister to help resolve outstanding political problems in a few districts of eastern Nepal due to the Limbuwan movement and in a few districts of the western and midwestern Terai," said, Uprety, adding, "Furthermore, we made the point that the verdict of the Supreme Court must be accepted by all Nepalis and the government should give attention to resolving citizenship issues."



EC also requested to the prime minister to take ownership of voter registration program with due attention to distribution of National ID card to all citizen. "We also reiterated our commitment to prepare new electoral roll with photographs," he added.



At the meeting, Uprety informed the prime minister about EC´s decision to conduct the next election with proper identification of voters, and a permanent end to multiple registrations and fake voting.



During the meeting, the EC chief and commissioners also expressed their commitment and readiness to holding of local elections if government is so prepared. "We however said local election can be conducted only after the rainy season this year," Uprety said.



The prime minister in response has expressed assurance to support the EC´s drive for credible elections.



At the end of the meeting, EC Chief Uprety informed the prime minister about the EC´s preparations for using electronic voting machines during the next general election.
