Earthquake death toll climbs to 5266 (Update-12)

KATHMANDU, April 29: The Home Ministry has so far recorded 5266 deaths caused by the devastating earthquake of April 25 and the aftershocks across the country.




The National Emergency Operation Centre under the Home Ministry said more than 10,224 were injured in the quake.

In the Kathmandu Valley, Kathmandu district recorded 1,039 deaths, while Bhaktapur district 250 and Lalitpur district 159.

In the eastern region, 51 were killed while in central region 3,098, in western region 407 and mid-western region two.

Based on the human casualty, Sindhupalchowk is the most affected district as the death toll reached 1400 in the district alone, according to District Police Office. 

The government has informed that the rescue operations are expedided in the quake-hit districts, including highly affected Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Dhading, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchowk, Gorkha and Rasuwa.

The Home Ministry has also informed that the foreign rescue teams are also actively supporting the rescue operations. The rescue teams from India, Sri Lanka, China, Turkey, Netherlands, Poland, Germany, France, Israel, Malaysia and JICA were deployed for search and rescue operations in various places of Kathmandu valley. According to the ministry, the Sri Lanka team rescued a youth alive from Balaju area. Meanwhile, the rescue team from Britain is deployed in Sindhupalchowk district. Likewise, 9 foreign medical teams are deployed in various affected areas.

According to the ministry, 16,824 security personnel from Nepal Army and Armed Police Force are deployed for the rescue operations so far.

Initiatives were underway to identify the bodies at different hospitals. 

1,600 tourists rescued 

A joint rescue team of the Nepalese Army, the Armed Police Force and the Nepal Police has rescued 1,600 tourists from Manang and Mustang and brought them to Pokhara. 

A total of 10 tourists of different countries including four in Kathmandu, five in Solukhumbu, and one in Makawanpur districts were killed in the earthquake. RSS

Lalitpur residents living in tents around Purnachandi


Having a waterless pond has turned out to be a blessing for the first time. In thus hour if crisis, with no place that could be considered safe, residents in and around Purnachandi, Lalitpur have been setting up camp in the 'pond'. The residents have managed to rent and purchase the resources like tent, mats and cooking utensils along with food.


Around 600 people have been benefitted due to this venture of the local people who were provide Rs 10,000 by Nepal Saving and Credit Cooperative Limited and Rs 15,000 have been managed by fund collected from the people themselves. Likewise, approximately 400 people have been camping at the premises of Caspian Valley College in Kumaripati.


Resources like tents and chairs have been provided by Nepal National Teachers' Association Central Committee, whereas the college's staff have been helping the people to manage food and other basic necessities. Though this has provided temporary relief in the face of the frequent earthquakes, the campers are quick running out of food and cash to sustain themselves.


Another serious problem of waste management is starting to take shape, which could spread communicable diseases in the people stuck together in hundreds of numbers. Similar other camps around the area in three different schools have provided temporary reliefs. (Reports: Sachi Mulmi/Republica)
