Defending champion starts with win

KATHMANDU, June 11: Defending champion VS Niketan opened the 4th White House Cup U-19 National Basketball Tournament with a 57-43 win over Golden Gate College on Saturday on the court of White House College.



Thirteen points from Subash Pun guided the team to the victory. VS scored 18 points against seven points of Golden Gate. [break]



VS took the second and third quarters 11-9, 18-14 for a comfortable 17-point lead. Golden Gate bounced back in the fourth quarter and took it 13-10 but it was too late to get hold of the game.



In the second match of the day, Triton College beat the host White House 52-44. Triton took the first quarter 9-6 and went down in the second and third quarters as White House utilized its home court advantage to score 17-4 and 13-12 with an 11-point lead by the end of the third quarter. Triton bounced back and took the last quarter 27-8. Kunga Sherpa scored 18 points for the winning team.



In the third match of the day, Morgan College defeated Gyan Niketan 66-45. Morgan took the first three quarters 19-9, 16-9, 22-15 but failed to continue the lead in the fourth quarter. Morgan lost the fourth quarter 9-12. Sujan Pun of Morgan was the highest scorer with 24 points.



In the last match of the boys´ category, G-4 group from Samakhusi beat Nalanda 57-49. G-4 lost the first quarter 6-9 but bounced back in the second and third quarters. They took both the quarters 14-13, 14-4 and drew the final quarter 23-23. Bijay Gurung was the highest scorer for G-4 with 19 points.



In the girls´ category, Morgan College edged past NIMS 34-28. Despite losing the first quarter 11-8, Morgan bounced back and took the second and third quarters 8-6, 14-3. Morgan again lost the last quarter 8-4 but the 10-point lead that they took by the end of the third quarter gave Morgan the narrow victory. Samichin Bista scored 12 points for the winning team.



In another match of same category, Nobel Academy beat CCRC 34-20. Rozina scored 16 points for the win. Nobel dominated the first quarter 20-4 which was enough to seal the victory as the score in the remaining three quarters was 20-4, 6-5, 4-7, 4-4.
