CIAA seizes cash, papers from road tax checkpoints

KATHMANDU, June 2: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Sunday seized over Rs 1 million in cash and some receipts, photocopies of bank vouchers and vehicle registration documents from road tax checkpoints at Dharke and Majhimtar in Dhading district suspecting irregularities in road tax collection.



A statement issued by CIAA spokesman Krishna Prasad Dhungana stated that the anti-graft body took the action with the view to investigate possible irregularities by the checkpoints. [break]



The CIAA officials seized cash and documents after complaints that the the road tax checkpoints were not providing receipts to tax payers.



"Rs 590,000 in cash has been seized from the Dharke checkpoint and from the residence of staffers of the same checkpoint and another Rs 436,000 from Majhimtar checkpoint and the residences of the staffers of the checkpoint officials of the same center was also seized," said the statement.



The CIAA has intensified its investigation drive in various sectors after the government appointed the chief commissioner and commissioners at the constitutional anti-graft body last month.
