This is the second price rise in less than a week. Poultry entrepreneurs had raised the price of chicken by Rs 15 per kg on Wednesday, citing drop in production.[break]
With the fresh revision in price, farmers will get Rs 160 per kg of live chicken. Customers will get live chicken at Rs 170 per kg.
Poultry entrepreneurs said they were forced to raise chicken price due to drop in temperature as well as production. “The drop in production coupled with rise in demand due to cold weather forced us to revise chicken price upward,” Janga Bahadur KC, president of National Chicken Sellers Association, said.
Chicken price had dropped to Rs 185 per kg in December 5 due to increased supply from Tarai districts.
“The supply from Tarai districts has stopped now and production in other districts too has gone down due to drop in mercury,” said BC.
According to association officials, demand for chicken in the capital increases by 10 to 15 percent during winter. “It is becoming difficult for us to meet the bloated demand due to drop in production,” said BC. He further added that price could increase further if production and supply situation remained the same in the coming days.
Daily consumption of chicken in the capital hovers over 200,000 kg.
The fresh price rise will elate poultry farmers, hatcheries and fee producers, who had been facing losses due to continuous drop in chicken price.
Retailers in the capital source chicken from local farms as well as from farms in districts like Dhading, Kavre and Chitwan, among others.
