KATHMANDU : Chairman of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Mahanth Thakur has said that the Constituency Delineation Commission (CD)´s recommendation on keeping the existing 240 constituencies intact has been made with an ill-intention of sidelining the Madhesi community.

Speaking at a function in Kathmandu on Sunday, Thakur said, “Population should be taken as a basis for constituency delineation as per Article 63 (3) of the Interim Constitution.” He said it is unconstitutional not to increase the number of electoral districts in line with the increase in population. He also demanded 121 electoral constituencies in Madhes, saying more than half of the country´s population lives in the Tarai.[break]

“We will not disrupt the November polls but our demands must be met,” he said, adding that only free and fair elections can bring stability in the country. Thakur said their silence should not be construed as their weakness. “Our silence should not be taken to mean that we are not serious toward the cause of Madhes,” he said. He further added that the Election Commission should provide a window period of at least a month to allow the remaining voters to register on the electoral roll.
