BARDIYA, Jan 19: Lakharani Tharu, 65, of Gulariya-11 in Bardiya, was on cloud nine on Monday after undergoing a cataract operation at a four-day health camp. After 20 years of living in the darkness, Lakharani now can see light at the end of the tunnel.

A poor Tharu housewife, Lakharani had developed cataract in her eyes some 20 years ago. She, however, could never receive treatment owing to her poverty. “I never had enough money for operation,” she said. “I am happy to receive free treatment after so many years of suffering.” [break]

Another local Pratap BK, 77, shared a similar story. Despite suffering from cataract for a long time, he did not go to hospital for treatment. “It is difficult for me to manage two square meals a day. How would I arrange money to treat my eyes,” he said, adding, “The free camp is a great opportunity for poor people like me.”

Hundreds of poor villagers suffering from cataract diseases have thronged the health camp in Bardiya. Over 800 patients are expected to receive treatment at the camp over four days. A team of 22 doctors and nurses led by Dr Govinda Poudel, an eye specialist with Tilganga Eye Center (TEC), has been deployed for the camp.
