ILAM, March 2: The border pillars and markers on the eastern border with India here which are damaged or lost or are in a dilapidated condition are yet to be repaired although a long time has passed following an agreement to this effect.

The border pillars have not been repaired due to the government´s apathy. [break]

A meeting of the border officials of Nepal and India held in Sikkim had agreed to repair the dilapidated border pillars and construct new ones on place of the lost ones.

The Chief District Officers of Liam, Panchthar and Taplejung districts has signed the agreement to that effect some 20 months back.

Nepalis living near the Nepal-India border are facing various problems and sometimes harassment from the Indian side from time to time due to the missing border pillars and the delay in repairing them.

Locals say disputes arise between the Nepali and Indian sides frequently due to the confusion regarding the border between the two countries in the absence of the border pillars.

It is said 60 border pillars out of the 499 such border markers on the 90-kilometres stretch of Nepal-India border in east Nepal are missing.
