KATHMANDU, Dec 15: The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern over the prolonging political deadlock in Nepal.

Secretary General Ban has also urged political parties in Nepal to agree on a broad-based government without further delay, keeping aside their partisan differences. “Secretary General is deeply concerned about the continuing political deadlock in Nepal,” his spokesperson quoted Ban as saying on Friday. Ban´s statement comes in the wake of political parties failing to reach a consensus on leadership of the new government that would be responsible to hold fresh Constituent Assembly elections. Series of negotiations among major parties after the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on May 27 has failed to yield any result due to differences among parties on key issues.

“He urges the country´s political parties to set aside differences in the interest of the nation and form a broad-based government without further delay. He also encourages the main stakeholders to create a conducive environment for the next elections,” the spokesperson quoted Ban as further saying.

The Secretary-General has also urged all actors in Nepal to reaffirm their commitment to the Comprehensive Peace Agreements and to safeguard the achievements of the past several years in line with the aspirations of Nepali people.

The CPA reached on November 21, 2006 had paved the way for the then rebel party CPN (Maoist) to formally join in the mainstream politics renouncing a decade-long armed insurgency.
