Four persons- Kul Deep Dhungel, Deepak Kafle, Krishna Ghimire and dozer driver Jagat Prasad Dahal- were held by the police for trying to change the river course today.[break]
As a result, the Balkot people picketed the Police Circle of Thimi, demanding the release of the detained ones and allow changing the river course. They sloganeered till 9:00pm.
A group of people had attacked the police as they intervened on the river diversion.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Rabindra Rayamajhi said they had to use force to disperse the rowdy people.
Though the apex court had issued order to not divert the course of river until next verdict some six months ago, three attempts were made to change the course of river, said former Deputy Mayor of Thimi municipality Chandan Krishna Shrestha.
An understanding was made in course of discussion held at local administration after locals from Thimi and Balkot repeatedly engaged in brawl when efforts were made to change the direction of the river.
Police intervened the landowners´ act and seized dozers five times while the latter were trying to divert the course of river to get their land freed from river encroachment, said locals from Balkot.
