Badminton ace Dhami leaves for China

KATHMANDU, June 18: Nepal´s No 1 U-19 badminton player Dipesh Dhami left for China on Monday to participate in a training at Dongguan. He will later compete in the Asia U-19 Championship to be held in South Korea.



Dhami is participating in the training and the tournament under the Asian Development Training as he had finished first during the training and sparring held in Bangladesh in October 2010. [break]Shiksha Shrestha will also take part in the training and the championship. Dhami and Shrestha were selected on the basis of their ranking and match performance.



Dhami was awarded a US$ 30,000 scholarship from the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) for finishing in the top position in Bangladesh.







According to General Secretary of Nepal Badminton Association Ramji Bahadur Shrestha, the scholarship will cover Dhami´s expenses for the training and tournament while the association will pay for Shrestha´s expenses.



Dhami had won seven titles in junior category at the national level and finished second in the Sixth National Games.



Dhami will participate in three training camps and tournaments in Malaysia this year. He will also take part in one tournament and training in Singapore. Before leaving for China Dhami said his target was to reach at least the third round in Korea. “If I perform well in Korea I will certainly win medal for Nepal in the South Asian Games.”



Dhami was bid farewell amidst a function held on Monday at White Gold College that has provided him full scholarship for his studies. On the occasion, the college also provided him playing kit as well as pocket money.
