KATHMANDU, May 3: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday said that about 3.1 million eligible Nepalis have been registered in the new voter list with their photograph and biometrics.

According to Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety, about 1.8 million Nepalis were registered under the commission´s ongoing voter registration campaign across the country. The registration campaign has gone nationwide for the past one month.[break]

Of the total, about 1.3 million voters were registered in the second phase of the voter registration program conducted in 58 municipalities of 43 districts while 34,000 Nepalis were registered during the trail phase.

"EC´s program has been running throughout the country without any significant obstruction. We have successfully completed the voter registration process in Kathmandu district where 82 percent of the total voters have registered themselves. This is a good result," EC spokesperson Sharada Prasad Trital said.

He also said that EC will make special arrangement for those who are currently abroad or failed to register during the first round.

The EC decided to begin voter registration in all 75 districts only recently. Earlier, the commission had decided to carry out voter registration only in 43 districts.

According to Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Uprety, it is the first time in EC´s history that its officials are meeting every adult citizen before registering them as voters.

"Meeting every citizen, taking their photographs, finger prints and personal details will help develop an authentic and reliable electoral roll for free and fair election," Uprety said.

The EC has deployed thousands of officials for the purpose.

Trital said the voter registration process has already been completed in 108 Village Development Committees (VDCs) and the process is currently underway in 1200 VDCs.

Those who have migrated from their original place will have to produce either migration certificate or recommendation from the VDCs concerned or land ownership certificate and electricity bills to get registered under the new process. Otherwise, they will have to consult the district election office of their original district.
