KATHMANDU, Feb 9: Minister of General Administration on recommendation of Ministry of Finance has transferred 29 peons stationed at Tribhuvan International Airport customs office on Sunday on charge of their alleged involvement in misappropriation of imported goods.

According to an official, the action was taken after an investigation found that the peons were involved in stealing goods like laptops and other potable but valuable items from the consignment that importers deposit at the customs and handing over the goods to concerned importers in turn of monetary benefits, often less than custom charges.

The investigation was initiated after some importers complained with the Ministry of Finance that some unidentified persons contacted them to tell that they had already taken out the goods deposited at the customs and asked them to pay them to get the goods. The official said that the peons used to ask the importers to pay them around 25 percent of the total customs that the importers have to pay to the government.
