The jail administration transferred 10 inmates loyal to Indra Gurung, who was accepted by a majority of prisoners as their leader, and eight inmates led by Kuber Pun, Gurung´s rival, to various prison houses located in Parsa, Rautahat and Palpa districts.[break]
While Gurung was transferred from Kaski prison house, Pun was allowed to remain there. Gurung´s supporters had protested his transfer by shouting slogans. Police had to use light force after Gurung´s supporters tried to walk out of the jail.
Two groups of inmates led by Gurung and Pun had clashed on Friday night, leaving 12 prisoners, all loyal to Pun, seriously injured. Nine inmates loyal to Gurung had also sustained minor injuries in the clash.
A committee formed by the District Administration Office of Kaski to probe the clash had recommended transfer of some inmates as one of the measures to avert such incidents in future.
The three-member committee led by Kaski´s Assistant Chief District Officer Antar Bahadur Silwal has revealed that the clash was caused by a dispute over money-lending. “Some inmates lend money to others at very high interest rates,” said Silwal. “If a prisoner borrows Rs 20,000, he will have to pay Rs 30,000 the next month. The two groups of inmates had been quarrelling over the issue, which led to last week´s violent clash.”
