Kamal, the only gold medalist Nepali weightlifter in the SAG, can participate in his own weight category of 69 kg. He had won gold in the 10th SAG held in Colombo. He was preparing to participate in 77kg weight category in Dhaka SAG. “I´m happy, I can participate under my own weight category,” said Kamal. Council had added to events in weight lifting to take the gold count of the game to eight in Dhaka. However, a country can participate to a total of six events at the maximum.
The council had added 17 events but the number of participants has not been added to the South Asian events. “We succeed to add events but the number of participants will remain same as the hosts Bangladesh cited problem of accommodation,” said Nepali representative in the meeting, Rabi Rajkarnikar. “We succeed to add events in which we expect medals”, he added.
The meeting has added events in athletics, boxing, judo, karate, swimming, cycling, weightlifting and wrestling. Javelin throws and discus throw are added in men´s athletics, while no event has been added in women´s athletics.
Likewise, five weight categories have been added in boxing and numbers of the total boxing events have been increased to 11. However, a country can participate in seven events at the maximum. “We´ll send boxers in the weight categories in which we expect medals”, said general secretary of Nepal Boxing Association, Rajiv Shrestha.
Two events in women´s category and one in men´s has been added in judo but only five male players can participate from a country though number of men´s events is seven. Sixty-one kg women´s category is added in karate. However, the number of participants is restricted to 4 though there will be five events in the category.
Rajkarnikar claimed that all the events except cycling´s road race have been added because of immense pressure from Nepali delegates.
