KATHMANDU, Jan 2: A youth who had come to Nepal from China for a vacation died after a drinking brawl during New Year celebrations on Friday night in the capital, police said.

Riwaz Acharya, 21, a student of Petroleum Engineering, was injured in a brawl at one Variety Restaurant at Mitrapark and died at his home a few hours later. According to police, the brawl reportedly took place at around 11 PM while the deceased had been partying with four other youths.[break]

Inspector Santosh Rathoor, chief of Metropolitan Police Sector Gaushala, said that it was yet to be ascertained whether Acharya had a scuffle with his own friends under alcoholic stupor or had been attacked by others.

“We have held all four who accompanied him at the restaurant. Presently, they are giving different statements. Further investigation will clear the case soon,” Rathoor said.

Acharya was found dead at his own home on Saturday morning. Investigation officials said he apparently died due to excessive bleeding. A small cut found on the back of his head lead to bleeding throughout the night.

His family members found a pool of blood when they entered his room forcibly.

Initial findings reveal that Acharya was escorted home by his drinking partners following the brawl at the restaurant. “His friends told his mother about the injury but he had flatly dismissed it entering his room. He could have been saved had he been given a proper medication then,” said officials.

“Acharya´s recklessness must have brought about the tragedy,” an official said, adding that a thorough investigation and the postmortem report might help solve the case soon. Acharya´s room was smeared with blood stains that indicated how he could have struggled before passing away. “Even the door´s knob was marked with blood. It also shows that he tried to come out of the room under severe pain,” Rathoor added.

Police had allowed restaurants and other recreational centers in the capital to open till 2 PM for the New Year Eve celebrations.
