“It was unwise of Basnet to make such statements. He must stop making such statements,” a senior leader quoted YAN standing committee member saying.

The leaders also said that Basnet´s statement is against YAN´s philosophy as the organization believes in civil liberty and freedom of expression.

Asked if the organization would take action against Basnet, the leader requesting anonymity said, “We have sought clarification from him. So, we will take a decision about the nature of action to be taken against him only after he furnishes his reply.”

Basnet is likely to clarify his statement at a meeting of the YAN standing committee on Wednesday.

Basnet had threatened to close down Nagarik daily and to throw Narayan Wagle, Editor-in-Chief of Nagarik daily, behind bars while addressing a gathering organized by YAN in Biratnagar on Saturday.

He also threatened to not spare any journalist who has written against Parshuram Basnet, the mastermind behind the attack on Republica journalist Khilanath Dhakal.
