Work on int'l airport begins in Pokhara

LEKHNATH, Nov 30: The task of ground leveling and fencing for the construction of a regional international airport at Chhinedanda in Pokhara will be completed within the current fiscal.



The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has directed the high-level committee formed for the constriction to complete the design of the strip area and runway of the airport within the current fiscal.



Organizing a press meet, the committee said the authority has released Rs 1 million for engineering survey and detail design of the airport as well as to level the ground.



The authority has allocated Rs 50 million for the airport construction The high-level committee was formed by the board of the CAAN last year under the chairmanship of CA member Rajkaji Gurung.



Chinese government has given high priority to support the construction on the request of Nepal government. The committee will stop farming in the 3106 ropanis of land allocated for the airport from this year.



The airport will have a runway of 2500 meters and 50 meters width after upgrade. On the approach side, construction of any physical infrastructure has been banned for up to 400 meters.



The total cost of the airport has been estimated to stand around Rs 12 billion. The land was acquired 34 years ago.
