Bhawani hanged herself in an attached toilet at MPC, Kalimati, with her own sari at around 11:30. “She hanged herself from the ventilation rod. We got suspicious as she didn´t come out of the toilet for a long time,” said DSP Tek Bahadur Tamang. [break]
Preliminary investigation shows that financial burden might have pushed her over the edge, the police said. A special squad of MPC, Kalimati, had arrested Bhawani on March 14 on a basis of complaint filed by Rita BK.
“We arrested her on a basis of a complaint filed by Rita BK who accused Bhawani of not returning her gold jewelries,” said DSP Tamang, adding, “It has been learnt that she had borrowed more than 40 tolas of gold from various people saying she wanted them to attend marriage parties.”
Joint Police Commissioner at Metropolitan Police Commissioner´s Office (MPCO), SSP Ravi Raj Shrestha, said, “We are still investigating the matter.”
However, human rights activists have expressed concern over security arrangements in the police office.
“The suicide inside police custody is an indication of serious security lapse,” said Gauri Pradhan, spokesperson for the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He added that NHRC will seriously study the case.
Bhawani had gone out of contact with her family since March 4 and had left a suicide note, according to police. Her husband, Chandra Bahadur Tamang, had lodged a complaint after she went missing.
Police informed that they had to provide security to her family for a day as people had threatened to kill her family and burn her house.
Bhawani is survived by her husband Chandra Bahadur and two daughters.
The body of the deceased has been sent to TU Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
