Milti Maya Rai, 39, consumed poison Friday as she had nothing to feed her seven children, according to Surendra Kumar Rai, a local. District Hospital in Diktel confirmed that the body was brought for postmortem with the help of relatives.
She was buried in Diktel with donations from local businessmen as cremation is forbidden around Diktel and the family didn´t have money to take the body home, said a relative. “We had to ask for donations as the Kirat Rai Yayokkha, Khotang charges Rs 3,000 for a burial in Hatdanda, Khotang-1,” the relative reasoned.
Poor locals of Bahunidanda earn their living by working as porters and laborers as the infertile land yields no crops. Neighbors claim Milti Maya may have taken the drastic step as her husband Garve could do nothing to feed the children.
